NUCCA Spinal care
The NUCCA procedure is designed to correct the head, spine, and pelvis back to a balanced unstressed position with a holistic approach to well-being. This reposition reactivates the transmission of healing messages from the brain to the affected part of the body (via the nervous system) so the body’s natural self-healing process can begin. There are only about 150-200 offices worldwide that do specialized work like ours.
The National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) was founded in 1966, by Dr. Ralph Gregory, from Monroe, Michigan, with the goal in mind of serving / helping practice members recover from their pain and illness by precise corrections of the upper spine. It is making these tiny corrections of the upper neck that allows the spine to return to its vertical axis, thus allowing for better overall bodily function. Dr. Roger Sperry, Ph.D., won the Nobel Peace Prize by discovering that 90% of the brain’s activity is used to balance your body within the gravitational field of the earth. He stated that if your body is distorted mechanically (off balance), it begins to affect the other 10% of the brain’s activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion, or thinking.

What is NUCCA?
NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a specialty within the chiropractic profession. The NUCCA procedure is designed to correct the head, spine, and pelvis back to a balanced unstressed position. This reposition reactivates the transmission of healing messages from the brain to the affected part of the body (via the nervous system) so the body’s natural self-healing process can begin.
Why is body balance so important?
The spinal column remains straight and balanced as long as the weight of the head is centered over the neck. When the weight of the head is shifted off center due to an accident or injury, the body will compensate and move into an imbalanced position. In an effort to keep the head centered over the neck, the spine and pelvis will twist and lock into a stressed position.
This imbalance shows up with one of the legs being longer or shorter, one hip higher or lower, twisting of the body framework, muscular imbalance, abnormal movement, and over time progressive wear and tear.
This body position can cause stress, tension and pressure on the entire nervous system, most importantly the brain stem (base of the brain). This is very important because our body shuttle millions of electrical and chemical impulses back and forth from the brain to every cell of our body each day. Any restriction of distortion of those messages (nerve impulses) can affect every body function. Many of these message are unconscious such as breathing, digestion, and circulation.
If this is not corrected, the long term effect is degeneration of that part of the body serviced by those restricted messages-resulting in mild to sever pain, lowered resistance to illness, behavioral changes, organ dysfunction, loss of mobility in limbs, and ultimately disease.

How is body balance restored?
The main objective of a NUCCA Chiropractor is to restore the entire head, spine, and pelvis back to a balanced unstressed position. Let us explain how it works at NDSC.
The doctor will calculate the exact position the entire spine has tilted, shifted, or rotated from its normal anatomical position.
The slightest degree of displacement of the spine from its normal position can cause body imbalance and brain stem compression resulting in increased health problems felt throughout the entire body.
By utilizing a formula calculated from physics and mechanics of x-ray, the doctor is able to make the NUCCA correction.
The doctor then applies a slight pre-determined pressure just below the ear at the atlas vertebrae (first neck vertebrae) to gently reposition the head over the center of the neck. This repositioning is what restores body balance and removes brain stem compression.
The NUCCA correction requires no forceful twisting, popping, or cracking, and is barely felt by the patient.
By correcting the spine with this precision, the entire nervous system begins to function optimally. It is this balanced unstressed position that allows the body to stabilize and begin a process of recovery and healing. It is the long-term stability of the NUCCA correction that reverses the progressive degenerative effects that body imbalance and brain stem compression has on the entire body.
Changes you might expected following the NUCCA correction.
As soon as the NUCCA correction is made and body balance is restored, immediately muscles begin to relax, blood and oxygen circulation is increased, healing messages are transmitted from the brain to the affected area and the body’s self healing process begins.
The body has now begun the process of recovery from the long term effects of body imbalance. The body may express itself in many different ways following the NUCCA corrections:
- Alleviation of pain and symptoms
- Tired and/or relaxed feeling
- Light headedness and/or headache
- Sinus drainage or popping in the ears
- Joint popping as muscles relax
- Throbbing or tingling sensations
- Muscle soreness over the first few days as the body has moved into a different position
- Pain in the area of an old injury
- Skin temperature changes, sometimes perspiration changes
- Body elimination-diarrhea or constipation
- Painful areas will shift to other areas of the body
- Many times discomfort in limbs will begin to move toward the hands and feet and eventually leave the body.
Should I see relief instantly?
The severity of the spinal condition will determine the amount of recovery time an individual will need. Some see relief immediately while other take more time.
Being out of pain doesn’t mean your body has healed. Usually it takes a month to recover (heal) for every year the spine has been in an imbalance position (misaligned).
Why are X-rays necessary before and after the correction?
The NUCCA Correction cannot be made until precise x-rays are taken and analyzed before the correction. The x-rays taken prior to correction (pre x-rays) allow the doctor to determine the exact magnitude and direction the entire spine has shifted from its normal position.
The calculated vector the doctor determines from the x-ray analysis is as individual to the patient as their fingerprints. No two formulas are the same.
Immediately after the initial NUCCA Correction the doctor will take two of the initial x-rays over to validate the correction was adequately made.
If the post x-rays showed an adequate correction the doctor will be able to utilize the same formula on any necessary future corrections. If an unacceptable correction was made the doctor will recalculate the x-rays and make another correction and then take another set of x-rays to be assured the best correction was made on the very first visit to the office
Often time future x-rays are unnecessary unless the patient has injured their spine in a different way that may have changed the initial correction formula.
What are the three phases of NUCCA care?
1. Acute Phase
The NUCCA doctor’s first and primary objective will always be to restore the entire spine back to balanced position. This will reactivate the body’s self-healing process in order to relieve pain and symptoms as quickly as possible.
2. Stabilization & Healing Phase
During this phase of recovery the NUCCA Correction is becoming stronger and more stable. Most patients typically notice more relief while requiring less adjusting during this time. Body balance will be monitored periodically under the doctor’s recommendations to ensure the correction is maintained and healing continues.
3. Health Maintenance Phase
During this time, the body will continue to recover from the long-term effects body imbalance has had on the entire body, providing the NUCCA Correction is maintained.
This phase is where people will begin learning new ways to take better care of themselves, which often time aids in the stability of the NUCCA Correction.
If patients maintain their correction by visiting the NUCCA doctor periodically, they have the ability to live a pain free life, strengthen their body’s natural defense system, and increase the quality and quantity in which they live life.
The NUCCA Treatment Process
Dr. Presas starts with precise X-rays to analyze and determine exactly how your spine has tilted, shifted, or rotated from its normal position. This measurement is as unique as your fingerprint — and the slightest degree of displacement can cause brain stem compression and body imbalance, resulting in back pain, stress, migraines and other problems throughout the entire body.
Using a complex formula, Dr. Presas then makes the proper NUCCA correction of the Atlas Subluxation Complex — the delicate bone structure that connects your head and neck. This gentle touch just below the ear at the first vertebra frees nervous system interference and helps restore normal nerve function. There’s no forceful twisting, popping or cracking. In fact, most patients barely feel a thing!
By correcting the spine with this level of precision, the entire nervous system begins to function optimally and the body can begin a process of long-term recovery and healing.
During the initial stabilization period, a number of NUCCA corrections may be required to reverse the progressive, degenerative effects of brain stem compression. Once the spine is in a stable holding position, many NUCCA patients maintain their corrections for weeks, months or even years at a time.
How often do I need a NUCCA correction?
During the initial stabilization period, a number of NUCCA Corrections may be necessary.
Once the spine is in a stable holding position many NUCCA patients maintain their corrections for weeks, months or even years at a time.
Recovery will continue as long as the NUCCA Correction is maintained. Patients who allow adequate time for the correction and stabilization of body balance will see the best long term results.

It happens with two appointments to the office. These two appointments may be scheduled on two different days. Each of the two initial appointments takes an hour to an hour and a half to complete.
Make your appointment now – call our office at (972) 916-9432 or send us a quick email and tell us when you’d like to come in.
During your first appointment to our office Dr. Presas gathers information about your health, does a preliminary exam to determine if the body imbalance (misalignment) is present. If imbalance is found and the doctor sees indication he can help you with your particular condition, we will then take a set of preliminary x-rays to determine the exact degree and magnitude of the misalignment. This will be the conclusion of your first appointment.
During the second appointment Dr. Presas will discuss the findings, make the spinal correction and take post x-rays to determine if an adequate correction has been made. Once this process is complete, follow-up visits will be scheduled.
During follow-up visits, Dr. Presas will evaluate your condition congruent with a healing timeline and only make spinal corrections when necessary. This will allow your body to fully recover from the long-term progressive degenerative effects of a previously misaligned spine. Recovery will continue providing the spinal correction is maintained.
